Horst Hoertner

Horst Hörtner (AT) is Senior Director of the Ars Electronica Futurelab.

Born in Austria, Horst Hörtner is a  is a developer and musician. He studied Civil-Engineering in Graz and Telematics at the Technische Universität Graz. He is currently Director and Senior Executive Developer at the AEC Futurelab.

In 1989 he freelanced as a developer in the areas of real time control, rope belt conveyors & robotics. In 1991 he co-founded the artists group x-space,  which created computer interactive arts, robotics, net-art and won a Prix Ars Electronica 93 Honorary Mention for Ein Ohr allein ist noch kein Wesen in 1993.

In 1994 he started a research project T-Base with Transit (an Austrian cultural institution) which involved creating a web database for telematic arts in Austria.

In 1996 he became Technical Director at Ars Electronica Center (Linz, Austria) with the responsibility of designing and setting up the installations on the premises including the CAVE. In 1997 he became Director of ARS ELECTRONICA FutureLab, managing the Ars Electronica development laboratory, responsible for the design of virtual environments, concepts for interactive installations, and systems-design for web based applications.

In 1997 he became a Member of Christian Doppler Laboratorium for software engineering at the University Linz and Associate Professor at the Universität für künstlerische und industrielle Gestaltung, Intermediäre Labors (Linz, Austria).

In 1998 he became a Member of the Multimedia Content And Broadband Expert Group (5th Framework Program, European Commision DGXIII/E-4). He was also the Moderator for the Computer animation and Visual Effects Prix Ars Electronica Forum in 1999 and a Jury Member for the Prix Ars Electronica in 2000.
