Robert van Heumen
Robert van Heumen (NL) is a composer-musician.
After a life as a mathematician, a trumpetplayer and a software programmer, Robert indulged himself in electronic music in 1999. Starting in New York City with a sampler and various effects gear, he soon connected to STEIM (Amsterdam) where he started to work in 2000. There he discovered the computer and the live-sampling software LiSa, and started to perform electronic music on stage. At the same time he got involved in choreographer Anouk van Dijk's work, making compositions for modern dance. In both his composed and his live music he uses a mixture of environmental sounds, toys, voices, sounds from kitchen appliances, and in general all kinds of 'found sounds'.
Van Heumen is performing regularly with the audio-visual trio SKIF++ (with Jeff Carey & Bas van Koolwijk), Shackle (working with electro-flutist Anne LaBerge on restriction), ABATTOIR (with cellist/vocalist Audrey Chen) and Whistle Pig Saloon (with guitarist John Ferguson deconstructing the guitar). He is a founding member of the N Collective
and has shared the stage with dj sniff (Takuro Mizuta Lippit), Michel
Waisvisz, Richard Barrett, Sakata Akira, Nicolas Collins, Oguz
Buyukberber, Luc Houtkamp, Guy Harries, Tom Tlalim, Nicolas Field,
Morten J. Olsen, Daniel Schorno, Roddy Schrock, Nate Wooley a.o.
Van Heumen is Managing Director of the STEIM foundation in Amsterdam, curator of the Local Stop concert series and member of STEIM's Artistic Committee.
Robert performed during the Rotterdam Headphone Lounge Le Placard in September 2005.
