Rudolf Frieling [SFMOMA]

Rudolf Frieling studied Humanities at the Free University of Berlin and received a Ph.D. from the University of Hildesheim.

Since 2006, Frieling is Curator of Media Arts at the SFMOMA. Previously, he was curator of the International VideoFest Berlin (today transmediale) from 1988-1994; curator and researcher at the Center for Art and Media (ZKM), Germany from 1994-2006: the Head of the Video Collection of the ZKM until 2001, and until 2005, Head of the research and online portal Media Art Net at ZKM; from 2004-2006, he headed the restoration and exhibition project 40yearsvideoart.de, funded by the German Federal Cultural Foundation, which published the book 40 years Videoart.de (with Boris Groys, Wulf Herzogenrath, and Dieter Daniels, 2006).

Frieling has curated various programs for the Goethe-Institut and international festivals as well as exhibitions related to media and art, most recently Sound-Image at Laboratorio Arte Alameda in Mexico City in 2003 (with Priamo Lozada) and the Net Art section of the 25th São Paulo Biennale in 2002.

Frieling lectured internationally on media and art, having been a guest professor of media history and theory at the School of Design in Mainz (2001-3), lecturer at the University of Fine Arts (UdK) in Berlin, and lecturer at the Media Center of Art and Design (MECAD) in Barcelona.

His publications include major print, multimedia and online publications: The Art of Participation: 1950 to Now (2008); Bandbreite. Medien zwischen Kunst und Politik (2004, co-edited by Andreas Broeckmann); and he co-edited with Dieter Daniels a series of multimedia and book publications on the history and current context of media art: Media Art Action (1997), Media Art Interaction (2000) and Media Art Net 1/2 (2004/2005). The essay Database and Context: Artistic Strategies within a Dynamic Field of Action was published in the V2_ aRt&D publication of 2005.

Frieling lives in Karlsruhe, Germany.
