Thomas Munz

Thomas Munz (DE) is an independent curator and editor.

Thomas Munz is an independent curator and editor living in Berlin. In his curatorial and editorial work he is focusing on contemporary art at the crossroads of technology, science and nature, and on the cultural and political implications of digital and electronic media on present-day society.

He has studied visual arts, film and media science at Hochschule fuer Bildende Kuenste Braunschweig, Germany, and at Institut Teknologi Bandung, Indonesia.

Munz was programme curator and publications editor of transmediale, the Berlin based international festival for art and digital culture from 2002 to 2009. In the 1990's he has co-founded the Werkleitz media arts centre and the Werkleitz Biennale, serving as its vice chairman and editor until 2001 as well as co-director of the Biennale's 2000 edition [real]work. Previously he was programme manager of the 1995/1997 editions of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation's international electronic media forum Ostranenie.

Throughout the last years he has curated exhibitions and compiled programmes in the field of art and media which have been presented in numerous institutions, galleries and festivals. Exhibitions include Deep North – Survival and Utopia at House of World Cultures Berlin in 2009, and unfinish! at Art Academy Berlin in 2007. Contributions as guest curator include venues such as Malmoe Konsthall, Microwave international media art festival, Hong Kong, Image Forum, Tokyo, Hartware Medienkunstverein, Dortmund, cph:dox/urban art stories, Copenhagen.

Publications as editor include the first and second volume of the transmediale parcours series Deep North in 2009 and conspire. in 2008, the programme book of the re-place conference on the histories of media, art, science and technology in 2007, the catalogue book Smile Machines – humour, art, technology in 2006, and Bandbreite – media between art and politics (as co-editor) in 2004.

 Thomas Munz was Senior Curator at V2_ in 2009.
