Boontje’s design philosophy is based on "a belief that modernism does not mean minimalism, that contemporary does not forsake tradition, and that technology does not abandon people and senses."

While some of his works (tranSglass) use found objects/materials, which Boontje describes as beautiful, "real, raw and unfinished", later series (Wednesday Light) rely on technology to produce old ideas in less labour-intense ways. Being a designer and a craft person, Boontje is inspired by conceptual and visual artists. His interest in digital processes stems from a production process that goes "straight from the computer to the object", and results in exquisite glassware, lighting and furniture.

Using technology and collaborating with digital artist Andrew Shoben and computer programmer Andrew Allenson, the series "Inflorescence draws flower patterns in a random manner and draws them differently each time. It also forgets what it has done before."

Tord Boontje works as product designer for Alexander McQueen and others, he teaches at the Royal College of Art in London, where he studied after graduating from the Design Academy in Eindhoven. The Tord Boontje Studio is now based in France; he has won numerous prizes, and his work is part of permanent museum collections. A biography by Martina Margetts was published in 2007.
