deepSurface _the unvisual image_

NOX: deepSurface

For the installation / exhibition of deepSurface in the EXEDRA gallery, Hilversum (NL), V2_Lab developed a series of 3D animations dealing with movements of the body in the architecture of NOX.

The projected images are not invisible, but unvisual. As we analyze the NOX projects of the end of the 1990s we can distinguish two areas, inaccessible to the eye: the diagrammatic interior of the computer and the neurological interior of the human body. If we try not to pay any attention to the optic these two dark caves suddenly seem to merge, they seem to constitute one continuous haptic space of affects. The installation shows these two spaces only. All the visual material of the various projects (CAD-perspectives, texture-mapped renderings, working drawings, construction photo's, photo's when finished, all in full-color) is made available to the visitors in this booklet. The installation shows black & white animated diagrams; on the one hand the forces within the machine and on the other hand the pulses and tensions in the body measured in the actual space when built. All projects are analyzed within this three-step procedure, from the computed to the built to the experienced, and back again.

In cooperation with V2_Lab, 1999.
