Die Luft über dem Toaster

Work by Norbert Schliewe, combining the Nipkow disc and the phonograph.

In 1995-2000 Norbert Schliewe built a device based on two ingenuous 19th century ideas: the Nipkow disc and the phonograph. It combines seemingly archaic technology with electronic and digital systems in order to investigate a new design of visual articulation. The machine is thought of as a nomadic device; camera, recorder, monitor and projector in one, enabling Norbert Schliewe to interact with people by capturing their portraits on vinyl. His performance/presentation deals with the capture, reconstruction and deformation of images through scanning and takes an interesting position with regards to questions related to the gathering and storage of imagery.
