Origin: Cycle #1

Cycle #1 is the first assisted expedition of Mischa Daams' Origin project.

With his project 'Origin', Daams sets out audiovisual expeditions into the astonishing abstract universe that results from a feedback loop between an lcd screen and a video camera. The audience experiences the unfolding of these expeditions in real-time as immersive, hypnotic trips through organic complexity.

With these expeditions, Daams highlights and exploits the physical nature of the digital camera and screen display by confronting them in a conversation with each other. As the one copies the other, information is lost in translation. Similar to cell division and mutation in nature, it is the imperfections in this copy process that result in organic, mutating deviations in the patterns that are formed.

To perform a constructive dialog with this unstable realm, Daams explores several cybernetic approaches. He is currently building tools in the form of physical machines to perform a choreographed, kinetic conversation between the interlinked media. The mathematical expeditions that result are aimed at bringing obscure phenomena to light that are more organic than geometric. His future plans are aimed at investigating the potential of algorithmic perception (computer vision) in order to conceive an expedition that is self-conscious, self-steering and therefore forever self-unfolding.
