V2_Jam is not a product, but a research line. The goal is to discover various ways of "media jamming" - synchronizing, modulating, mixing, splitting, interweaving different media into one coherent art piece.
Software in V2_Jam is not a tool, but media, equal media among others. It's much easier to jam together free/open source software - this delimits the scope of the research.
Various "deliverables" of the project are planned; these plans are constantly changing depending on the results of the research. First, a media handling objects library was planned to be written, but later an existing one was found to which is being contributed now. This library is connected to Miller Puckette's Pure Data (an open source analog of Max) so it should be easy to create modules pipelines and control them interactively. The other long-term deliverable is a general purpose "timeline" application (another way to control virtually anything).
Media formats like the Internet, film, television, video and audio are increasingly overlapping each other. V2_Lab has found that many artists wish to "jam" (mix) with a variety of media. However, as yet no adequate software for "media jamming" is available. Therefore V2_Lab has launched its own V2_Jam project in order to find out how different media formats (3D animation, Mpeg, et cetera) can be mixed. The aim is to develop hardware and software components, like an interface to control such media mixing.
