Manifestation 4 - Symposium

The symposium with Kees Christiaanse (NL), Lebbeus Woods (US), Florian Rötzer (DE), Derrick de Kerckhove (CA), Daniel Libeskind (US), and moderated by Wim Nijenhuis (NL), debated the questions: are architecture and the visual arts able to confront the challenge, posed to them by electronic communication which has thoroughly changed the social and political structures in our society?

In a series of lectures, the theme of the Manifestation for the Unstable Media 4 was discussed in depth: are architecture and the visual arts able to confront the challenge, posed to them by electronic communication which has thoroughly changed the social and political structures in our society?

Three architects with sometimes very conflicting viewpoints contributed to this symposium: Kees Christiaanse, Daniel Libeskind and Lebbeus Woods. Further, two theorists -- Florian Rötzer and Derrick de Kerckhove -- participated as lecturers. Wim Nijenhuis moderated the symposium and the following forum discussion.

Kees Christiaanse's lecture was entitled: Laat Duizend Bloemen Bloeien (or: Let a Thousand Flowers Blow). He elaborated on several statements: living in a 100% man-made environment or in a 'natural laissez-faire'; the necessity of transportation; the Dutch landscape as a circuit board for several programmes; architecture and scenario; buildings as carriers of information; the new public space.
Lebbeus Woods' lecture The Secret of the White Box focused on his concepts of so-called 'freespaces' and 'free-zones'.
Florian Rötzers contribution was entitled Virtual Worlds and Material Architecture.
Derrick de Kerckhove gave a lecture entitled Networks Architecture and the Conquest of Time.
