Media Art Meetup

V2_Lab for the Unstable Media hosts a crash course in the field of Art & Media Technology. Four meetups give a comprehensive overview of the field; its history, the current themes and issues, and possible future developments.

The crash course is suitable for anyone who wants to know more about the intersection of Art, Technology & Society. Whether you are completely unfamiliar with 'Media Art' or have been following the developments at V2_ and similar institutions for the past decades, this is your chance to find answers to your questions on the subject.

Experts within the domain, along with our archivist, researcher & media theorist Arie Altena, and a selection of contemporary artists will break down the subject in a way that is understandable and accessible for everyone.

Join us at V2_Lab for the Unstable Media on November 27 from 20:00–22.00 (doors open at 19.30) for the first of four planned meetups: 'An Introduction to Art & Media Technology'.

Arie Altena

Next to being the website, and archive editor at V2_, Arie Altena writes about art and technology. He is especially interested the interplay between new technologies, art, culture & society and is the author of Wat is Community Art? (V2_Publishing).

During this meetup Arie will give a general overview of the field and shortly introduce the themes/subdomains of the coming three meetups; Bio Art, Machine Art & Net Art (dates below).

Nicky Assmann

Nicky Assmann (1980, NL) is a Rotterdam based artist with a background in Film and ArtScience. She combines artistic, scientific and cinematographic knowledge in experiments with physical processes aimed at sensorial interference. Against the background of our visual culture, in which the experience of reality increasingly takes place in the virtual domain, she returns to the corporal fundaments of seeing. In her artistic research, she combines topical technological developments with elementary physical processes. In using distorted mirroring reflections she intends to challenge preconceived notions of our surroundings, opening space for parallel realities.

Assmann holds a Bachelor of Arts in Media & Culture [Major Film Science] from the University of Amsterdam and a Master in ArtScience from the Interfaculty of the Royal Conservatoire & the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. She is part of the Macular collective, which focuses on art, technology, science, and perception.

During this meetup Nicky Assmann will share her own experiences and views from the perspective of an artist active in the field, as well as show an artwork from her extensive archive.
