Test_Lab is a bi-monthly public event hosted by V2_, Institute for the Unstable Media, that provides an informal setting to demonstrate, test, present, and/or discuss artistic research and development (aRt&d).
In this edition Workspace Unlimited will demonstrate IMPLANT, students from the HKU will use the audience as a test panel for their installations, and dj’s Siuli K.O., Basskowski, and Uberchica will each perform a set.
The IMPLANT project, initiated by Thomas Soetens and Kora van den Bulcke is a physical installation in Kunstencentrum de Vooruit in Ghent as well as an electronic interactive virtual world installation. The installation is part of a network of virtual worlds named Common Grounds. During the opening event of IMPLANT two other virtual world installations, EXTENSION and DEVMAP, will be accessible. DEVMAP will be accessible physically from V2_, Institute for the Unstable Media, in Rotterdam and EXTENSION will be accessible physically from the Society for Art & Technology (SAT) in Montreal. The three installations will be shown in network, which means that during the opening event visitors can follow the activities at all three locations. This can be done by watching streamed video on big screens at the three locations or by virtually visiting the other locations through the network. (For more information on IMPLANT, see the text by curator Wayne Ashley added below.)
Following the official opening of IMPLANT Game Design & Development and Digital Media Design students of the Utrecht School of the Arts will show their graduation installations. The audience will serve as a test panel to generate feedback on the work of these new young designers and developers.
