The Internetional is a two-day symposium focusing on one of the most important areas of visual culture today: the Internet. Curators, artists, and theorists will discuss this topic with each other and the public in a diverse program of panel discussions, dialogues, lectures, and workshops. The impact of the Internet and social media on visual culture in general has been substantial. A young generation of contemporary artists, defined as Post Internet, have surfaced on social media and in exhibition spaces.
Post Internet is a popular but often contested term for art whose production, distribution, and consumption use the Internet's infrastructure and/or aesthetics. Artistic practices labelled as Post Internet vary widely but have a particular Internet-awareness in common: artists who, for example, use the Internet as a digital archive for making work; who use social media as a platform or topic; or who use data analysis and algorithms as tools. They take a critical or affirmative position in relation to the Internet and the relationships it produces. This art is shown in galleries and exhibition spaces and increasingly in an online environment as a hyperlink, PDF file or on social media and blog formats such as Tumblr.
The Internetional two-day symposium will attempt to further unpack the Post Internet concept. Is Post Internet a useful term for defining the increasing entanglement of digital and analogue culture? How can we emphasise the diversity and complexity of this development?
