At this event, artist Erica Scourti will present her performance piece Negative Docs. The performance will be followed by a conversation focusing on Scourti’s ongoing research into life, gender, and labour in fully-mediated world, drawing on her recent projects like Empathy Deck – a ‘twitterbot with feelings’ that responds to its followers tweets with unique cards drawn from her diaries and self-help texts- and Personal Proxies, which imagines the artist replaced by both human and digital assistants.
Scourti is widely known for her investigations into the automation of empathy and care and the rise of proxy selves in the context of an artistic practice that draws heavily from- and often has direct effects on- biographical experience. Drawing links to older projects like The Outage, a ghostwritten memoir drawn entirely from her digital footprint and online presence, Scourti will discuss the ‘profilisation’ of the self and its potential subversion through strategies of gaming, mimicry and fictionalising. There is also a podium discussion with Sebastian Olma and Philippine Hoegen.
