Dossier: The Evening of the V2_Archive

A dossier celebrating 40 years of V2_. Taking the V2_Archive as a starting point to explore 40 years of electronic art and experiments at the intersection of art, technology and society. How does an archive contribute to a critical attitude towards current and future technological and cultural developments?

This dossier collects shorter and longer contributions about archiving and the technological arts, especially with an eye towards our own V2_archive. The V2_ archive combines documentation of by now (January 2022) 40 years of electronic art, a large part of which is freely available on the website, with photos of performances and installations, videos, scans of posters, programme booklets and texts.

The Evening of the V2_Archive on the 20th of January 2022 takes V2_’s archive as a starting point to explore how an archive can contribute to a critical attitude towards current and future technological and cultural developments.

V2_'s archive editor Arie Altena wrote an essay about 40 years of experimenting with art and technology at V2_ which is published in the book 40 years of V2_ (2022). In this book he also also reflects shortly on the question what histories about that past are suggested by the content archived at V2_.

Lena van Tijen contributed a text that reflects both on the practice of archiving – also inspired by the work of Tjebbe van Tijen – and the idea of the archive as an artwork in itself.

Katazyna Jankovska dives into the V2_archive looking for histories and ideas about posthumanism and ecology.

Added to these are links to content in the archive about archiving and art history. During its existence V2_ has at various times investigated the problems of archiving media art, as well as issues around archiving digital born content. All of this is worth to revisit, either as glimpse of the past, if not because the ideas are still inspiring.
