aaajiao aka Xu Wenkai (CN) is a digital artist, blogger and free culture developer.

2020
Active online as a media artist, blogger, activist and programmer, aaajiao is the virtual persona of Shanghai- and Berlin- artist Xu Wenkai. Born in 1984—the title of George Orwell’s classic allegorical novel— and in one of China’s oldest cities, Xi’an, aaajiao’s art and works are marked by a strong dystopian awareness, literati spirits and sophistication. Many of aaajiao’s works speak to new thinkings, controversies and phenomenon around the Internet, with specific projects focusing on the processing of data, the blogsphere and China’s Great Fire Wall. aaajiao’s recent projects extend his practice to various disciplines (among them, architecture, topography, and design) to capture the pulse of the young generation consuming cyber technology and living in social media.

The Chinese pendant to Régine Debatty's media art and culture blog we-need-money-not-art was founded by aaajiao in 2006. WNMNA has fis, sophywt, ilikesleep working as editors, and hlitch, phoebe, yangschwang, kulilin, dobby as translators. The main aim of WNMNA is to introduce the information of new media art abroad to China by translating the articles on WMMNA as well as some other collaborating websites, and to write original reviews to support the 'art from China' tag, from which people get to know the development of new media art in China.

aaajiao is (also) a computer visuals programmer and website designer. Born in 1984 in Xi'an City, he now resides in Beijing. In 2003 he established the sound art website: cornersound.com.
