Ana Brumat

Ana Brumat is a multidisciplinary artist based in Rotterdam.

In her works Ana Brumat (1991, Slovenia) creates a fascinating and richly textured imaginative world that draws the viewer into metaphysical environments that are uniquely informed by emblematic complex systems and organisms. The artistic investigation is based on the discovery of new possibilities and relations between artificial life and natural systems and it leads to an expansion of our understanding of complex macrocosmic structures. These analogies allow to take the artwork out of an exclusively fictional work and place it in another discursive space. The application of the homeostatic practices to artificial cybernetic systems makes it able to adapt inside a natural habitat and it draws new perspectives of progressive alienated forms inside complex possible future life structures.

Ana Brumat first graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice (2017), where she explored the arts of printmaking, painting and multimedia. Afterwards she moved to Berlin and formed an experimental multimedia project ‘mraak’ participating in and co-organising various events and exhibitions. To further her studies, she moved to Rotterdam where she graduated as a Master of Arts in Fine Art and Design: Lens-Based Media at Piet Zwart Institute (2020), during which she received an award for the Best movie in Art Research Labs in Eye Filmmuseum in Amsterdam. Following the completion of her study she has continued to reside in Rotterdam, taking part in various audio visual projects and film making all over the Netherlands and further abroad. She participated at many exhibitions around Europe such as International Printmaking Triennial of ULUS (Belgrade, RS), Graphic Art Biennial of Szeklerland (Sfântu Gheorghe, RO), Corpo IN/formazione (Sofia, BG, Venice, IT, Antwerp, BE), Paper against Cement, collateral event of International Printmaking Triennial of Belgrade (Belgrade, RS), Partija, iMstrument, SKALA at Layerjeva Hiša (Kranj, SI), Svetlobna Gverila/Lightning Guerilla (Ljubljana, SI) and The New Current (Rotterdam, NL).
