Jill Magid

Jill Magid (US) multimedia artist, writer, performer and director questions notions of (auto-)surveillance.

I seek intimate relationships with impersonal structures, and prepare for our seduction.

Jill Magid engages the disciplining systems in society, such as police, CCTV, and forensic artists and exploits the dormant possibilities of their services. Her work evokes questions of presence, memory, and subjectivity rather than success-rates or functionality. She employs the system, via its latent qualities, to establish an intimate and poetic experience. Weaving narrative patterns through a variety of media, Magid is both performer and director, distilling and presenting her experience to the viewer as her witness. After receiving a Masters of Science in Visual Studies from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2000, Magid relocated to Amsterdam as a participant at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, and has since been showing internationally. She is currently back in the USA as a visiting artist at the Cooper Union, New York.
