Marije Baalman

Marije Baalman is an artist and researcher/developer working in the field of interactive sound art.

Marije Baalman has a diverse background in Applied Physics, Acoustics, Electronic Music, Computation Arts and Interactive Technologies. Her research goes into the use of wireless networks for live performance (such as dance and music), installations and interactive environments. She is particularly interested in multiparticipant environments taking inspiration from larp.

Baalman is working as a freelancer both creating her own artistic work, and developing hardware and software for other artists. To realise her works she mostly uses open source technology (software and hardware) and she is an active contributor to the open source community.

In 2017 she organised the symposium “The Craft of Experience Design” in The Hague. From 2013 to 2016 she was the project manager (within STEIM) for the METABODY EU project. Since 2016, she is a member of the artist collective Instrument Inventors Initiative (iii) in The Hague.

Baalman is currently writing the book Composing Interactions to be published in 2022 by V2 (Rotterdam).
