Marit Shalem

Marit Shalem is an artist. Her work consists mainly of experimental video work for which she writes and draws the scripts.

Marit Shalem, born in Haifa, Israel, 1971, moved to Berlin in 1989 two months before the wall went down. After graduating at the HdK, Berlin, an exchange period in Glasgow and one in Rotterdam, she moved to Rotterdam. She also works under the name SpOp. In her projects Shalem focuses on facets of recent visual culture, the effect of commerce and human relation in this digital era, examining possibilities of interpretation through fragmenting and combining story lines. Her work consists mainly of experimental video work for which she writes and draws the scripts.

Between 2014-2016 she curated the film series Layers in WORM, Rotterdam. In 2018 she produced the three channel installation Broom Groom, which was also exhibited at gallery Ursula Walter in Dresden. In the period 2018-2020 she has collaborated with musician Badgewearer for the project Works on White with performances and video films. Lately, thanks to grants by a.o. the Mondriaan fund and the Creative Industries fund NL, she has produced the projects Alterations and Knots with musician Dirk Bruinsma. Nowadays working on the project Milk, tracing the transition of liquid to powder.
