Miguel Carvalhais

Miguel Carvalhais is a designer and musician.

Miguel Carvalhais is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto, where he teaches computational art and design. His artistic practice often intersects with his research and spans computer music, sound art, and sound installations. He runs the Crónica label for experimental music and the xCoAx Conference on Computation, Communication, Aesthetics and X. He is the author of Artificial Aesthetics (2016).


He collaborates with Pedro Tudela in the @c project since 2000, and works often with LIA on audiovisual performances or installations. In 2003 they started the Crónica label where they have been releasing experimental and electronic music.

He completed his PhD thesis in 2011. Following that, he published the book Artificial Aesthetics: Creative Practices in Computational Art and Design in 2016.

He helps organizing the xCoAx conference on Computation, Communication, Aesthetics and X, with editions in BergamoPortoGlasgowBergamo, and Lisbon so far, and an upcoming edition in Madrid. He has also helped to organize the Invisible Places symposium and ICLI 2014.
