Oliver Grau

Oliver Grau (DE/AT) is an art historian, media theoretician and Dean of the Department for Image Science.

Oliver Grau is an art historian and media theoretician with a focus on image science, modernity and media art as well as culture of the 19th century and Italian art of the Renaissance. His research focuses on the history of illusion and immersion in media and art, the history of the idea and culture of telepresence and telecommunication, genetic art, and artificial intelligence.

He is Professor for Image Science and Dean of the Department for Image Science at Danube University Krems.

He is the author, among others, of Virtual Art: From Illusion to Immersion (MIT Press, 2003), editor of Mediale Emotionen (2005) and MediaArtHistories (MIT Press 2007) and founder of the pioneering international digital art archive Database of Digital Art.
