Call: Artists In Residence V2_ + Museu Zero

V2_Lab for the Unstable Media (NL) and Museu Zero (PT) are launching a new joint residency program to encourage art projects that respond to ecological challenges using sustainable technologies.

The initiative aims to analyse the current narrative of smart environments in which a better world is suggested through virtual interconnectivity even as our ecosystems are constantly sending out warning signals that the connections between our natural and social surroundings are actually failing. The cloud industry clearly doesn’t have all answers in one place! This residency program challenges artists to explore the physical consequences and potential of smart technologies with respect to human values – and the quality of life for all organisms.

Artists from the Netherlands and Portugal are invited to submit projects that critically incorporate new technologies and cultivate alternative ways of engaging with natural and social ecologies.

The program starts with a first residency at V2_ in Rotterdam, April 04 - 12 and closes with a second residency at Museu Zer0 in Tavira-Algarve, May 09 - 17.

The selected artists will receive a travel and accommodation budget and a stipend, as well as expert support from curators and project managers during development of their project.

How to apply

1. Present a concrete project proposal for the residency in a video no longer than five minutes. Explain how the project relates to the theme and which technology you would like to use.

2. Upload your video to a service like Youtube or Vimeo.

3. Fill out the Google-docs online application form, providing your personal details and short portfolio. Don’t forget to include the link to your online video proposal. Application deadline is February 8, 2019.

Four project proposals (two by Dutch artists and two by Portuguese artists) will be selected for a residency by an expert jury. The artists’ names will be announced by the end of February. If your project is selected, we will contact you to discuss details such as travel dates and accommodation.

About Museu Zer0

At the initiative of the Instituto Lusíada de Cultura, a proposal has been put forward to create Museu Zer0 (the Zer0 Museum), a museum for digital art in Tavira, Algarve, Portugal. Museu Zer0 will stand out as unique in the area. The great challenge and gamble stem from the context in which this intervention will occur – abandoned industrial premises in a mostly agricultural area that is gradually becoming depopulated but retains extraordinary aspects of the Algarve’s ethnology, culture and heritage – given the ambition to transform it into a center dedicated to artistic production. We plan to highlight the challenge of producing the technology and structures that will be installed here, which will serve as mere tools for the artists to use, both for creative and productive purposes on site and for their later presentation and promotion internationally.
