The winner is...

The Share Prize 2012 went to Stanza for his work Capacities: Life In The Emergent City. Mark Shepard received an honorary mention for Sentient City, and Antoine Schmitt' City Lights Orchestra received a special mention for being the most participatory, bottom-up project..

V2_ is proud to congratulate all three artists on their achievements, specially since they have all worked with V2_ as artist-in-residence during the years.

Stanza came to V2_ in 1986 for the Artitexture event. Stanza (then as Bourbonese Qualk with Simon Crab) installed the "designed wallpaper" exhibition and showed the Artitexture video (which was recently made part of the Dutch heritage by NIMk).
His current winning work Capacities: Life In The Emergent City captures the changes over time in the environment (city) and represents the changing life and complexity of space as an emergent artwork. Capacities goes beyond simple single user interaction to monitor and survey in real time the whole city and entirely represent the complexities of the real time city as a shifting morphing and complex system. The jury considered his work was found to have effectively represented, both aesthetically and, above all, technically, city life in real time, monitoring boroughs of London to show the complexity of an urban location in real time as a system in perpetual mutation.

Antonine Schmitt was an artist-in-resident at V2_Lab, where he developed World Wide Ensemble, shown during DEAF07. About his winning project City Lights Orchestra - a visual symphony for city windows, Schmitt states at night, each connected computer illuminates the window of its office, of the home and blinks, pulsates, beats, fades in and out, each according to its own score, but all in rhythm with all the others. The smart phones in the street do the same. The Share Festival is inviting all of Turin to take part in the collaborative crowd-sourcing event on November 10, 2012.

Mark Shepard was a V2_ summer resident in 2010, where he started developing Sentient City Survival Kit, a work that has put him on the AR (augmented reality) radar, and that was later shown at DEAF 2012. The jury of the Share Prize 2012 argued that "Sentient City" by Mark Shepard received an Honorary Mention as it poignantly questions such fashionable concepts as a "Smart City" based on the internet of things and ubiquitous computing. Offering us an artistic survival kit against an over-coded environment, he prepares us for life in a dystopian sentient city.

The competition is open to all artists that explore issues concerning our society today, in which globalisation and the pervasive reach of technology and new media have become the object of artistic interest, against a backdrop of continuing, non-stop change. The Share Prize was launched in 2007 as a cornerstone of the Share Festival, held in Torino (Italy).

Piemonte Share Festival is an annual event held in Torino-Italy, dedicated to contemporary art and culture in all its global dimensions and interconnections with the Internet and new media. Share Festival was founded in 2005 by Simona Lodi and Chiara Garibaldi. The festival is organized by the cultural association The Sharing. Every year an overarching theme, encapsulated in the title of the event, brings the festival alive with exhibitions, video screenings, in-depth conferences, symposiums, workshops and performances.
