Visualizations by Bas van Beek at the Stedelijk

V2_ collaborated with Dutch designer Bas van Beek on the creation of visualisations for an intervention that is part of the 2020 exhibition 'From Thonet to Dutch Design, 125 years of Living at the Stedelijk', which opens on 25 July 2020.

In the Summer of 2020 the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam presents an extensive selection of design. The Stedelijk invited artist-designer Bas van Beek to advise on the interior and add a contemporary twist. He responded with a number of special interventions, playing with ‘quotes’ from design classics. Bas van Beek blended references to historical designs by Dagobert Peche (Wiener Werkstätte), K.P.C. de Bazel (Nieuwe Kunst), Lambertus Zwiers (Amsterdam School) and Nathalie du Pasquier (Memphis) into new wallcoverings and animations that evoke a unique mood in every gallery. V2_ collaborated with Bas van Beek on the development of visualizations based on the work of Nathalie du Pasquier.

Five visualizations were created fusing the method of Soll LeWitt and the aesthetics of Nathalie Du Pasqier. A large part of LeWitt's oeuvre consists of a series of numbered instructions for murals executed by his assistants.

The aesthetics of Nathalie Du Pasqier were analysed by Bas van Beek and dissected into a series of instructions and thus a program by Jan Misker (V2_) and Sebastian Pappalardo. The rules and conditions of the composition are predetermined and executed by the computer. For the visualisations generative models and algorithms were used, implemented with a combination of P5.js [2], Hydra [3] Physics [4] and two.js [5].

The interventions by Bas van Beek for this exhibition are realised thanks to Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie and Mondriaan Fonds.
