3x3 Jan Adriaans Swarming Chants II

The second experiment of Jan Adriaans in the 3x3-series with supporters of Sparta, Rotterdam and composer-pianist Dante Boon.

Jun 2019
18:00 to 21:00
location: V2_ Lab for the Unstable Media Eendrachtsstraat 10, 3012 XL, Rotterdam

The second experiment of Jan Adriaans will take place at the Groundfloor of V2_ where Adriaans installation Swarming Chants was on view. For the second experiment Adriaans invited the composer and pianist Dante Boon and supporters of the football club Sparta from Rotterdam.

The performance builds on ideas that Adriaans explored in his installation Swarming Chants, which is based on sound recordings of various football fans from across Europe. The work explores how their chants spontaneously erupt during football matches and become a collective singing voice. Adriaans exposes the power of this collective voice by turning its swarm dynamics and affective impact into a unique sonic experience, which also evokes the peculiar vocal power of operatic choirs.

Experiments are an essential part of every art practice. Even more than the end results, experiments, bèta versions and try-outs offer an inside look on how an artist thinks and works. Therefore, the experiment is made central in 3x3.

V2_ offers three artists the space, time and resources to develop three experiments. Every first Friday evening of the month the public can witness one of these experiments live. A unique experience, since no one knows what experiments will lead to…

Jan Adriaans

Jan Adriaans is a visual artist who through video, sound and performance, shows the idea of a human as an independently operating entity as an illusion. By drawing a parallel with the animal, the set of constraints we are subjected to become more apparent. The human Self; a mechanism without free will, but with the capacity to form narratives as a political force.

Adriaans’ often uses the camera to capture modes of behaviour within specific power relations, in an attempt to cut through to the overlap of social and neurological patterns and abstractions in the emergence of thought. Art can make these patterns tangible and detectible through its aesthetic representations.
