Are you unfamiliar with the field of media art but interested in the impact of media technologies on society? Are you a student or young professional working in art, design or engineering who’s curious about how these fields meet? Then this crash course is for you!
 

Media Art x Sculpture

Sculpture has long been associated with strenuous physical labor, from chiseling huge blocks of granite to mixing plaster and melting metal. In this second edition of the Crash Course, we’ll invite participants to reflect on how artistic research centered on media technologies has influenced the field of sculpture making, from the automation of the manual labor that used to characterize the discipline and the impact of 3D-modeling software to how sculptural practices have changed in the context of data visualization, interactive art and virtual reality environments. We’ll explore how media art has changed sculpture by turning spectators from passive viewers into active participants and redefining craftsmanship to include digital production.

Ronald van der Meijs

Ronald van der Meijs (1966) lives and works in Amsterdam. He develops location based sound installations that show how we relate to nature in our technocratic society. These technical structures are a reflection on the location and its history. A field of tension is being created where acceptance plays a major part by creating a dialogue between nature and technology or nature versus culture. Unpredictable and slow natural processes control the work and form a generative concept of sound, space and time.

His recent sound performances with inflatable cell structures are based on the research of creating a sound and sculptural dialogue with the audience created by the grow and decay of the installation structures. The aim is to generate a wider experience of the installation object as it makes parallels between the immersive amplified sounds and the slow changes of its identity and atmosphere.

He received the Haarlem Vishal Art Price 2015, was nominated for the Prix Ars Electronica 2017 and shortlisted for the Witteveen & Bos Kunst en Techniek Price 2018. He exhibits around the world such as Centraal Museum Utrecht, DordtYart in Dordrecht, Centro de Arte Complutense Madrid, Verbeke Foundation in Kemzeke, Triënnale New Media Art at National Art Museum Of China Beijing, File in Sao Paulo, Land Art Biennial Mongolia, Sculpture Space in Utica New York, Kapelica Gallery in Ljubljana and the ERES Foundation in Munich. He received art commissions of the Dutch Government including a major sculptural assignment for the new HeadQuarters of Europol in The Hague, Netherlands.

Boris van Berkum

Boris van Berkum (1968) is a Neo-artist. He fuses styles and forms of various periods, cultures and religions in his art. Van Berkum works in ceramic and bronze, epoxy-paste and even fondant icing. In the early 1990s Boris lived in Prague, where he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts. He supported his studies by producing political cartoons and illustrations for English language newspapers. When he returned in the Netherlands, Van Berkum established MAMA, ‘showroom for media and moving art’ in Rotterdam in 1997. He served as its director until 2007. Since leaving MAMA he has reinvented himself as an visual artist and has appropriated traditional and modern techniques. Van Berkum is currently working on a programme “Neo Afro,Winti 3D” where he assists Winti priestess Marian Markelo to revive and introduce mask-dancing and the use of sculpture in the Winti religion and ritual. The art of van Berkum is collected by public collections like Museum Boijmans van Beuningen and the Groninger Museum.

Sophia Bulgakova

Sophia Bulgakova (born 1997, Odesa, Ukraine) is an ArtScientist and interdisciplinary artist currently based in The Hague, the Netherlands. Sophia is working on the intersection between art, technology, and society, focusing on the relationship between light, perception, and imagination. Through various sensorial inputs in her installations and performances, she tries to engage viewers, impacting their ways of perceiving reality and exploring new possibilities beyond it.

She studied sculpture in Kyiv and then got a foundation diploma in Photography and Time-Based Media at the University of the Arts London in the UK. Finally, she graduated from the ArtScience Interfaculty at the Royal Academy of the Art and Royal Conservatory in The Hague, the Netherlands. Her works were exhibited at CTM Festival (DE), Sonic Acts Festival (NL), Baltan Laboratories (NL), Mediamatic (NL), and Ningbo City Exhibition Hall (CN), among other places.

A Crash Course in Art & Media Technology 

With society increasingly shaped by media technologies, it’s important that more people actively join in the public debate around those technologies. Art has the potential to invite a wider audience into that debate and offer it new perspectives. To facilitate this, V2_Lab for the Unstable Media provides the annual Crash Course in Art & Media Technology. In the upcoming third season of the course, we’ll turn our focus to the places where media art and the visual arts intersect. In four connected modules, we’ll cover the impact media art has had on painting, sculpture, photography, and filmmaking.
