Artists Julian Oliver and Damian Stewart lead special walks through central Rotterdam. With the aid of their augmented-reality tool The Artvertiser, the artists introduced participants to a city in which billboards have been replaced by artworks.
The walks are part of the Image Festival, taking place in Rotterdam for the second time. The Artvertiser is a special pair of binoculars that replaces street advertising with artworks using augmented reality technology. Take a walk with The Artvertiser and you’ll find yourself surrounded by artworks where unsuspecting passersby see only ads. With this project, Julian Oliver and Damian Stewart take back the street from the businesses that dominate public space with their commercial messages, making it available for art.
Oliver and Stewart previously presented the Artvertiser concept at V2_’s Test_Lab: Tools for Propaganda, the expert meeting Artistic Explorations, and TEDx Rotterdam. The Artvertiser is in continuous development: work is under way on a smartphone application, and Julian Oliver is working with V2_ and Brussels’ iMAL on a new version of The Artvertiser for the Rotterdam city walks.
Besides leading the walks, Julian Oliver also speak at the festival symposium at Friday October 29, 10:10 a.m. Tickets for the keynote sessions at the Cinerama Cinema are available at the website of the Image Festival.
This year’s Image Festival takes place from 22 through 30 October. The Cinerama Cinema on Westblaak, around the corner from V2_, is the heart of this festival devoted to the image in its broadest sense.
