Conflux invites you to experience a program of audio visual performances, public art interventions, multimedia commissions, experimental club nights and talks reflecting on the festival theme ‘Exit Human’.

The theme ‘Exit Human’ originated from the various questions that arise when thinking of humans and their relationship with the constant transformation within technology, ecology, society and space. During the conference thinkers, artists and performers reflect on this years theme and explore radical new ideas on how the post anthropocene will come into being. How will our bodies adept? How will our senses evolve? Or are we bound to exit stage left and stop to exist.

The exhibitions show artworks and installations that emerge at the intersection between science, art and technology. In some of the works, technology is being used to give us a dark glance on how our future could evolve. Other works experiment with new forms of sensory perception and strive to activate the imagination that arises when encountering abstract fields of light and sound. These installations explore the limits of our senses by using fast rotating mechanisms, stroboscopic light and multichannel speaker setups.

With: Joanie Lemercier, Carla Chan (at V2_), Marnix de Nijs (at V2)_), Cocky Eek (at V2_), Macular, Mariska de Groot, Marco Broeders.

Exhibition at V2_

The exhibition at V2_ shows three works that are closely related to Conflux’ overall festival theme ‘Exit Human’ and question urgent matters concerning the Post-Anthropocene.

The first work that deals with this topic is Marnix de Nijs’ AOR-200 Autonomous Oil Reserve. The project is described as a DIY consumer system designed to protect any personal oil reserve. A personal oil reserve is a necessity in the current timeframe where production of this precious liquid is under constant pressure and an oil shortage is not inconceivable. The work shows oil barrels that are hacked by a device which could make the whole reserve explode. The work can be seen as a direct warning on how the end game of humanity could look like.

On a more abstract level Cocky Eek is presenting a big black inflatable called ‘Void’. The work gives people the opportunity to insert their head in to a dark void in which kinetic sound becomes the major actor in a experience of amaurosis. Besides all the conceptual metaphors this act embodies, the work gives the audience a sensorial experience, reminding us on our direct relation to the world through our senses. What happens if you take them away, or enhance others by creating a hyper focus on sound?

The last work in the V2_ exhibition is the immersive video installation ‘Drifting Towards the Unknown’ by Carla Chan. Within the work she projects white waves on layers of smoke which evoke a feeling of timelesness. About the work she wrote “The video installation Drifting Towards the Unknown is a meditation on the feeling of drifting aimlessly, of experiencing the loss of direction in your own work or life.”

The overall exhibition stages a dark setting in which abstract and sensorial experiences are combined with concepts that arise when thinking of humans and their transformative relationship with technology, ecology, society and space.

Club Nights

In a time in which our societal freedom is heavily under discussion, a space for escapism becomes more and more important. Since the dawn of time humans felt the need to immerse into dance rituals where sound and the human body interact. Club culture caters for this need and provides a space where escapism, trance and full body immersion in sound and light relate to technology.

Conflux explores the current state of electronic dance music by inviting a few of the most innovative electronic and techno-driven musicians and local talents who experiment with the boundaries of club culture and dance floor rituals. With these nights Conflux strives to push the limits of the sonic pallet, combining the worlds of nocturnal sound with mind-bending visual experiments.

With: Pessimist, Umwelt, Samuel Kerridge, Mad Miran, Unit Moebius, Zohar, Marsman, Das Ding, Acidic Male, Slick Chick, Genyten, Raff, Rita Maomenos, Ruwedata, Inge K, Blondewednesday.

Thinkers, artists and performers reflect on the festival theme: 'Exit Human'. Through lectures, talks, and discussions the conference will focus on the transformation of nature and society by reflecting on current social developments within art, technology, and science. We are slowly but surely moving towards the post-Anthropocene. How will humans adapt to the constant changing world around us? What changes will we see on both a global level and on a biological level?

With: Stefan Sorgner, Lisanne Buik, Matthew Fuller, Geocinema Network, Visual Methodologies Collective, Lawrence Lek's The Sinofuturist Trilogy, Roel Dobbe, Eric Parren, Holly Dicker + Artist talks (to be announced).
