DEAF 2014 - The Progress Trap

DEAF2014 Dutch Electronic Art Festival - The Progress Trap.

May 2014
Jun 2014
07:00 to 16:00
location: V2_, HNI and other locations in Rotterdam

From 22 May - 25 May 9:00 - 23:00 (Exhibitions continue from 27 May - 9 June)

Our current notion of progress as technological innovation has lured us into “The Progress Trap”. However seductive quick gains from short term technological solutions are, this addictive cycle of temporary victories comes at the expense of more profound change. Progress has become a means to an end in itself and has been decoupled from the cultural and social advances that it was supposed to help achieve.

DEAF2014 proposes to view the innovations of our globalized world through a critical lens and aims to contrast the shallow gloss of our current techno-centric notion of progress with the aspiration of truly advancing on a human scale.

What is DEAF?

DEAF serves as a public forum and meeting place for young creative talent as well as established professionals, scientists and business stakeholders whose work focuses on our contemporary technological culture. Originally started by V2_ Institute for the Unstable Media in the mid 1980s; DEAF continues as an independent entity since 2012.

At DEAF, we look at current social and cultural urgencies with a fresh, critical view. Art, design, fashion, music, science and technology are combined effortlessly, crossing paths in playful, visionary and critical projects. DEAF’s exhibition, project presentations, symposium and performances show what artists and designers are creating in their labs and how their discoveries can contribute to the development and design of technology and society at large. DEAF always serves as a place for (inter)national experts to exchange knowledge and experience and forge new connections that will help them take the next step in their professional development.

For the 2014 edition DEAF is cooperating with Het Nieuwe Instituut for architecture, design and e-culture for its Forum program and as the festival's main location, as well as with V2_.
