Centuries before the invention of the computer, algorithmic instruction code can be found in Latin poetry, the Kabbalah, Western composed music and several forms of experimental poetry, thus forming an important, but often neglected historical pretext of contemporary computer arts. In this lecture Berlin-based writer Florian Cramer tries to sketch its very contradictory history from kabbalistic spells to computer viruses.
