A Crash Course in Art & Media Technology: Intelligent Machines

An evening on Art & Artificial Intelligence.

Oct 2020
19:00 to 22:00
location: V2_ Lab for the Unstable Media

After a century of sci-fi engendered fears of humanoid robots taking over the world and enslaving humanity, we find that machine learning has silently crept into every aspect of our lives. As we take advantage of the wondrous applications AI has brought us, such as virtual personal assistants and personalized news feeds, we are increasingly confronted with the dark sides of these technologies, such as the information echo chambers they create and the racial/gender/social biases represented in their code. Find out how artists are critically reflecting on these challenges and join the dialogue on the future of Art and Artificial Intelligence. To help us with this we have invited special guests:

Sieta van Horck

Sieta van Horck is a project manager in the V2_lab. Projects she guides include a wide range of artworks, hosting the Critical AI meetups, the Summer Sessions network for Talent Development and coordinating various art exhibitions. She is educated as a creative technologist and holds a BA in Digital Media and Culture and MSc in Media Technology. As an artist her main interest lies in merging nature and technology. She uses technology as a language to explore, play, research the human connection with the natural world, and to make us feel more present and closer to our human senses. During this event Sieta will present work and research from the V2_Lab & archive.

Jeroen van der Most portrait

Jeroen van der Most

Dutch artist Jeroen van der Most, or shorthand Most, has created art with data, algorithms, and artificial intelligence for over 10 years. He is a frequent international keynote speaker about creative AI and his vision on technology. Van der Most’s art was covered by most larger Dutch newspapers, TV programs like Tegenlicht and international media like The Art Newspaper, TheNextWeb and artnet.com. He creates artworks autonomously, but also developed pieces for organizations like Sogeti, Amnesty International and housing-website Funda. Jeroen will guide us on a journey through the past, present and possible future of Art & AI.

Vera van der Seyp

Vera van de Seyp

Vera van de Seyp is a graphic designer, creative coder and media artist. She has great interest in artificial intelligence, languages and finding systems in chaos. She works in Amsterdam as designer and artist, graduated from the Master’s program Media Technology at the Leiden University, teaches Digital Media at the Graphic Design department at ArtEZ, and gives workshops and lectures across Europe. In her work, she explores new technologies, digital tools and fields in media where boundaries are still blurry and yet to be defined. This evening Vera will present some of her own work and talk about her experiences of AI in her artistic research and practice.
