Interfacing Realities covers a series of four masterclasses that focus on new concepts for information management in general, and the usage and creation of databases and archives in contemporary art practices in particular.

The master classes deal with the use of databases and archives by artists, to which each master class has a specific approach (image, music, interactivity and interdisciplinarity):

Metadating the Image with Lev Manovich (RUS/USA), November 22 - 26, 2002, C3, Budapest (HU)

Mapping Your Creative Territory with Joel Ryan (NL/US), November 27 - December 1, 2002, ZKM (DE)

HUMO with Rafael Lozano-Hemmer (MEX/CDN), February 3 - 7, 2003, Ars Electronica Center (AT)

Collaborative Culture with Sher Doruff (NL/USA), March 3 - 7, 2003, V2_ during DEAF03 (NL)

During the five-day master classes knowledge and experience will be exchanged through case studies and presentations of exemplary research projects or art projects. Designers, developers, architects, students and artists will discuss and work together with the master class leader on assignments, projects, concepts and small implementations around the theme. Each master class has a theoretical and a practical part.

A publication was written about the general theme of these master classes containing essays by the master class leaders, the assignments and case studies. The publication Making Art of Databases was published in May 2003.

Interfacing Realities is a Culture 2000 project initiated by V2_ and realized in collaboration with EncArt. EncArt (European Network for Cyber Arts) is a longterm collaboration between the ZKM in Karlsruhe, Ars Electronica in Linz, C3 in Budapest and V2_ in Rotterdam that started in 1997.
