Refracted Reality

The academic year 2020-2021 was one of great uncertainty. The global pandemic brought a chaotic pause: while our lives came to a halt, the world as we knew it changed uncontrollably. As our relationships with the spaces and places we inhabit shifted, broke and dissolved, artists began to develop tools to keep a grip on reality. They created lenses onto the world around them that sounded their identity, emotion, history and geography. Instead of reconstructing our relationships with the world around us to create a new universal normal in the image of the old one, these lenses emphasise difference and diversity in our outlook onto the world. They in fact refracted reality.

This exhibition is a collection of works created between 2020 and 2021 by graduate artists from the Lens-Based Media program of the Piet Zwart institute. The works are lenses they created to make sense of the reality they found themselves in. Together, the works are a meeting point of small and grand narratives about relationships between individuals, nature and culture, and how technology can serve as a resignifying tool, a twisting lens.
