WATERWORKS is an exhibition exploring the cultural role and meaning of water. It comprises several technology-based artworks that look at some of the most pressing global challenges of our time, brought about by the new water reality. Water is life. Every living thing needs water to survive. Not only does the human body consist of 60 percent water, it is also essential for producing food, clothing and computers, moving waste streams, and keeping us and the environment healthy. Yet we lack a sustainable approach for handling this commodity.

WATERWORKS shows how artists can help us to think about water issues and how their ideas and proposals can complement science and government policy. The works in the exhibition look at issues such as the time investment required to deal with drought and how collaborating with new nonhuman migrants can help us understand changes in the port of Rotterdam. They reimagine global coastlines, try to predict the future of the climate by contemplating its past through ice cores, and reconsider the chemical composition of marine ecosystems through a different understanding of the interconnections between the human body and its emotions.

Some of the works in the exhibition have been developed as part of the EC-funded STARTS4Water-residencies.
