V2_Lab for the Unstable Media (NL) and Museu Zer0 (PT) are launching their second shared artist in residency program to encourage projects that critically reflect on the relations between humankind, territory, and environment through the use of digital art.

This residency program challenges artists to explore the physical consequences and potential of smart technologies with respect to human values, societal consequences and the quality of life for all organisms.

How can we reimagine smart environments with respect to the changing societal and ecological territory? How can we use digital art to form alternative imaginaries for balancing the digital and the natural world?

Artists from the Netherlands and Portugal are invited to apply with a project that critically incorporates new technologies and cultivate alternative attitudes to engage with natural and social ecologies.

Practical information

The total duration of production period: 5 weeks
One V2_ residency in The Netherlands: from 17 to 25 September

V2_ Lab for the Unstable Media is an interdisciplinary center for art and media technology in Rotterdam. It presents, produces, archives and publishes research at the interface of art, technology and society. Founded in 1981, V2_ offers a platform where artists, designers, scientists, researchers, theorists and developers of software and hardware from various disciplines can discuss their work and share their findings. In V2_'s view, art and design play an essential role in socially embedding technological developments. Through critical dialogue, artistic reflection and practice-oriented research, V2_ provides a context for exploring issues relating to technology’s social impact.

Museu Zer0 is a museum dedicated to digital arts, rehabilitating part of the facilities of an agricultural cooperative of Santa Catarina da Fonte do Bispo, in Algarve, Portugal. The big challenge of this space starts exactly from the context where this intervention will take place, and the ambition to transform it into an internationally recognized center, but sustained in the territory where it will be implemented, with strong marks of its cultural and ethnographic heritage.
